From Disentis

Railway

By train (SBB) to Chur, where you change to the nice red carriages of the ›Rhätische Bahn‹ and travel via Illanz to Disentis. The journey passes the famous gorge of the ›Vorderrhein‹ which is reckoned an outstanding touristic highlight.

Alternatively you can travel by train (SBB) via Lucern to Göschenen. There, you change to a train which is operated by the ›Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn‹ and runs via Andermatt and Oberalppass to Disentis. Especially the second part of this journey offers an excellent panoramic view.

Car

From Zurich on the highway A3 or from St.Gallen on the highway A13 to Chur and further on to the exit ›Disentis/Reichenau‹. Via Flims, Laax, Illanz to Disentis.

From Basel on highway A2 via Lucern to Göschenen. On the old winding road through the gorge of Schöllenen with the famous historic devilsbridge up to Andermatt and via the Oberalppass to Disentis.

Key information

The access from Disentis is the shortest one to the Cavardiras hut.

Difference in altitude: 860 meters (from Caischavedra) respectively 1510 meters (from Disentis)

Time duration: 3–4.5 hrs (form Caischavedra) respectively 5–6 hrs (from Disentis)

Short description

In the upper part of the village of Disentis starts the cableway (with ample parking space at the base station) which brings you up to Caischavedra at 1’860m above sealevel. From there you follow the well red-white-red marked trail to ›Lagh Serein‹ at 2072m. Continue along the from now onwards white-blue-white marked trail via P 2432 to P 2586 just below the ›Brunnigrätli‹. Through boulders up to a shoulder (big marks) and up to the Brunnipass at 2793m. On the ridge turn west and after approximately 250 meters descend onto the glacier. In northeaster direction to P 2619 and in a short slight ascent to the hut at 2649m. During the summer season the trail on the glacier is marked with amber pylons.

From Bristen

Railway

The SBB will bring you comfortabely from Zurich or Basel via Lucern and Arth Goldau to Erstfeld. There you take the Postbus to ›Amsteg, Post‹ where you have to change to the Bus to Bristen which drives you to ›Golzern, Talstation Seilbahn‹, the starting point of the trip.

Car

From Lucern on highway A2 to Amsteg. From Zurich on highway A14 and A4 via Zug to Schwyz. Along the ›Lake Lucern‹ to Flüelen. On highway A2 to Amsteg and up to Bristen to the parking area P3 or P4 of the Golzern cableway.

Key information

Rich in diversity but long ascend through the romantic Maderanertal.

Difference in altitude: 1800 meters

Time duration: 7–8 hrs (possibility of a two-day-trip with an overnight-stay in the ›Hinterbalm hut‹)

Required maps: Schächental and Amsteg (Nrs. 1192 and 1212, 1:25000, swisstopo) or Klausenpass and Disentis (Nrs. 246 and 256, 1:50000, swisstopo)

Classification: marked mountain-hike on secure trail

Short description

The base station of the Golzern cableway is situated approximately 1.5km east of Bristen. The impressive but long ascend starts here. You walk through the romantic Maderanertal along the wild waters of the ›Chärstelenbach‹ to the ›Alp Guferen‹. The white-red-white marks will lead you to the other side of the river and further on to the crossroad ›Blindensee‹ at 1375m. Once more changing riverside, the trail clambers steeply up to Hinterbalm (possibility of accommodation).

From there you reach Brunniboden via Bündner Biel come to the last steep part. Underneath the impressive ices of Brunnifirn we climb this trail which is secured by chaines. At the edge of the glacier, at 2619m you turn east to the Cavardiras hut.
